Playback versteht sich als Alternative bzw. Ergänzung zum ewig gleichen Oldie-Repertoire der „Best Of“- und „Greatest Hits“-Schubladen. Die Sendung erinnert auch an vergessene Bands und Songs der Rock- und Pophistory, zeigt Entwicklungen auf und stellt Bezüge zur gegenwärtigen Musik her. Denn die „Playbacker“ wollen durchaus nicht nur als „alte Säcke“ von der „guten alten Zeit“ erzählen.
Dabei ist Playback weder elitär, noch gibt es musikalische Tabus: Von Abba bis Z.Z. Top, von Nick Cave bis Zappa, von Funk bis Punk und Reggae bis Rock wird das musikalische Universum durchstreift.

John Watts stammt aus einer Musikerfamilie und wurde in seiner High-School-Zeit von den Heroen der Avantgarde-Musik der späten 60er beeinflusst. Ende der 70er machte er selbst Furore mit seiner New-Wave-Combo Fischer-Z, die als die englische Antwort auf die Talking Heads und Television gehandelt wurde und auf der Insel Kultstatus erreichte, bevor sie ihren Siegeszug über ganz Europa und Australien antrat. Watts hat in den darauffolgenden Jahren als Solokünstler einen gewaltigen kreativen Output gehabt, der von musikalischen Einflüssen wie rare grooves, rap und Indie bis hin zu Poesie und Comedy geprägt war. Mit dem neuen Album Punkt! im Gepäck schaute John Watts im Sender vorbei und es wurde eine sehr vergnügliche Sunde in der sich Florian Damm mit John nicht nur über Musik sondern auch viel über Politik unterhielt. Grund genug John Watts die gesamten 2 Sunden von Playback Zu widmen und neben großen Teilen des Interviews auch viel Musik aus derumfangreichen Discographie vo Watts zu berücksichtigen.
