Playback versteht sich als Alternative bzw. Ergänzung zum ewig gleichen Oldie-Repertoire der “Best Of”- und “Greatest Hits”-Schubladen. Die Sendung erinnert auch an vergessene Bands und Songs der Rock- und Pophistory, zeigt Entwicklungen auf und stellt Bezüge zur gegenwärtigen Musik her. Denn die “Playbacker” wollen durchaus nicht nur als “alte Säcke” von der “guten alten Zeit” erzählen.
Dabei ist Playback weder elitär, noch gibt es musikalische Tabus: Von Abba bis Z.Z. Top, von Nick Cave bis Zappa, von Funk bis Punk und Reggae bis Rock wird das musikalische Universum durchstreift.
